Bulb onions are generally the most common type of onion. Bulb onions come in a variety of colors, including red and purple, white, green, and brown. These onions originate from southwestern Asia, and were spread with international trade over time. Probably the oddest type of onion is the green onion, as it doesn't come in a bulb shape at all. These "scallions" as they are officially called may look different, but they are still genetically very similar to other onions.
